Michael D. Barnes is Professor of Public Health Education at Brigham Young University, and currently directs the Master of Public Health (MPH) program. As a nationally Certified Health Education Specialist since 1992, and using 15 years of experience functioning as a community organizer, health educator, and public health researcher/consultant, Dr. Barnes is actively involved in teaching, research and professional service. He has been awarded various national research awards through collaboratively completing approximately 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and 40 peer-reviewed published proceedings and national-level presentations, producing 9 peer-reviewed book chapters, and garnering approximately $900,000 of funded research since coming to BYU in 1997 ?? with additional collaborative works and experiences gained at New Mexico State University as an Assistant Professor. Additionally, he has professional various leadership and service commitments with the Society of Public Health Education
American Association for Health Education
and the Utah Department of Health. Dr. Barnes draws on these real-to-life service and research experiences as he teaches upper-division and graduate-level courses in the Department of Health Science. Dr. Barnes received a BS degree and a MS degree in health promotion at Brigham Young University and a PhD in public health education at Southern Illinois University. In his free time, Dr. Barnes enjoys life with his family doing cultural and outdoor activities, and in providing service for community, church, and civic responsibilities.
