A Program of Incomparable Breadth
The Department of Dance provides an academic dance program so extensive in its offering that it s unmatched by any other university in the world. More than 13,000 students take classes every year in one or more of the department's four areas of emphasis: ballet, ballroom, modern dance, and world dance, as well as in tap, jazz and aerobic dance.
Enriching Lives Through Dance
Instruction in each division is based on a belief that there is a redeeming value in dance that can enrich women, men, and children of all ages. The philosophy of the department is that dance is the optimal educational tool to refine, integrate, and invigorate the body, mind, and spirit in developing and energizing the whole individual.
Sharing the Joy of Dance
The Department of Dance is dedicated to presenting wholesome dance to as large an audience as possible. Many of the college's four highly-praised performing groups: Theatre Ballet, The Dancers' Company, Ballroom Dance Company, and the International Folk Dance Ensemble tour somewhere in the world each year. As an outgrowth of a solid academic program, each group has received recognition from professionals audiences throughout the United States and the world-from Blackpool, England to China, and from New Zealand to almost all the countries of Europe. Many of their performances have been broadcast on television to literally millions of people-including their performance in the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympic games.

Many of the highly skilled and knowledgeable resident faculty have been wisely recognized for their individual contributions in the field of dance. Yet it is their dedication and commitment to the core values of Brigham Young University from which they draw insight in preparing students at all levels to effectively serve others through teaching and artistic excellence.

The academic appeal of BYU's Department of Dance is centered around an experienced core of respected professionals who have earned recognition and respect worldwide. The curriculum is diverse, yet unified, with a variety of core classes required of all majors, to which the desired specialized emphases is added. While remaining in step with contemporary trends in dance, the program provides a solid, practical foundation for a variety of personal interests and professional applications-all as an accredited institution al member for the National Association of Schools of Dance.
